Their romance is opposed by Marie's anti-English father, and the villainous Pereira, who desires Marie. They are Voortrekkers who take part in the Great Trek whom Quatermain has to rescue.

Marie was the 1st Haggard book I've ever read. I loved it and immediately went on line to order more. Unfortunately, none of the others seem to even fall in the same genre. Marie DOES take place in 19th century Africa and has many adventures, as do the others, However, whereas Marie is very character-oriented and is written with great depth of feeling, the others in his Quartermian series I've read seem more "Slash-slash, bang-bang- you're dead!" like Burroughs et al. I'm not ready to give up yet. I still have several more to read.Product details

If you would like to discover the idea behind so many movies- both old and new; you must read H. Rider Haggard. His stories are exciting and well told. He develops his characters through excellent dialog and action.His plots are exciting and are not predictable. Haggard has many more stories about the main character and they are all very good.
